Stadium nights

Optus Stadium nights from Crown Towers

The stadium is a 15 to 20 minute walk by Crown's own estimate. That walk is the best argument for staying here on a big night.

Optus Stadium opened in January 2018 on the northern end of what used to be the Burswood Park golf course. The Burswood Park Board calls it a 60,000-seat multi-purpose stadium with views of the Swan River and the city; Wikipedia gives a capacity of 61,266 including standing room. Crown Perth describes it as "just a short 15 – 20 minute walk away".

For a hotel guest, that walk is the whole point. After a match or a concert, tens of thousands of people head for trains, buses and car parks at the same time. From Crown Towers you can walk back along the river and be in your room while the queues are still forming.

Event-day rules at Crown

On major stadium event days, Crown asks guests to plan ahead. Its parking page warns of road restrictions, and its event-day parking map shows the free P8 car park as unavailable. Crown Theatre's FAQ makes the same point: expect road closures, use public transport where possible, and arrive early. If you are driving to the hotel on a match day, arrive well before the crowd and leave the car with valet.

Which room for a match weekend

For two friends or a family of four, the twin rooms are the obvious choice: the Deluxe Twin and Premier Twin each take four guests in two queen beds. The Premier Twin promises a river view; Crown does not say which way it faces, so if seeing the stadium from your window matters, ask the desk to put the request to the hotel. For a larger group, connecting rooms are listed on request for the Deluxe Twin.

The morning after

This is where stadium weekends and Crown's policies collide. Big matches and concerts often fall on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays — the days when Crown says late check-out is not available. Plan for an 11am check-out. If you want a slow day, book a pool daybed for the afternoon half or a spa treatment instead; both work after you have handed back the key.
